In the book Culture Making, Andy Crouch states,
"Culture is what we make of the world. Culture is, first of all, the name for our relentless, restless human effort to take the world as it’s given to us and make something else." (pg. 23) Furthermore, Crouch states "Culture Making is people (plural) making something of the world - it is never a solitary affair." (pg. 40)This kind of making something of the world is what I think of when I think of Mestizo on Salt Lake City's west side. Mestizo is doing some culture making of their own and bringing the community along with them. Not only is Mestizo a coffeehouse where many gather for discussions over a cup of coffee, but they are an art gallery and studio, home to Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts. Mestizo also is dedicated to strenthening the Latino/Latina Community and is seeking to do some culture making through activism in the community. Mestizo is seeking to make something of the world on Salt Lake's west side. Seeing what is happening there has been an encouragement to me and a great example as I think through what it means for me and what I am being called to do here in this place.

Mark - Great comments on Mestizo. I live just a couple blocks and frequent this great coffee house often. Not only is working to strengthen diversity for the Latino / Latina community but also the religous, LGBT, and many other communities. SLC in itself is a great community mixed with so many great cultures. I love this city.
